The backgrounds for Her Song were created in Adobe Photoshop & Procreate. I used compositing techniques in After Effects to finesse the final imagery and make them come alive.

A lot of time was spent finalizing the line work for each scene. When this was complete, I would use a multitude of different brushes when colouring to create the desired aesthetic. I found After Effects to be an essential tool in background production. By using different blurs, masks and effects, I could polish off scenes and give them the cinematic feel that we were going for.

The opening scene needed to have a strong and dynamic look which was mostly created through tone.

I found lighting to be very effective when compositing scenes set in the main character's house.

Colour played a huge part in taking the audience back in time throughout the film.

Pans were used in certain occasions to help place the audience into a scene quickly.

I used strong tones and textures in specific scenes to create the harrowing feeling the Mother & Baby Homes were known for.

The womb needed to feel like one of the only safe spaces placed within the narrative.

A magical and slightly unnerving background was created for a scene involving the Banshee's nest.

The warmth of the cottage at the end of the film depended on the use of heavy blurs and specific balmy colours.
