The backgrounds for BOG were created in Adobe Photoshop & Procreate. I used compositing techniques in After Effects to finesse the final imagery and make them come alive.
A lot of time was spent finalizing the line work for each scene. When this was complete, I would use a multitude of different brushes when colouring to create the desired aesthetic. I found After Effects to be an essential tool in background production. By using different blurs, masks and effects, I could polish off scenes and give them the cinematic feel that we were going for.
We forced ourselves to push our use of colour during this project. The strange colour palettes created tension in the desired areas.
I like to use After Effects to make my backgrounds come alive in their final pass.
This interior scene needed to have a strong tone in order to reflect the somber part of the storyline.
Creating depth throughout the cave scenes was an important factor to remember when producing the backgrounds.
We wanted the colour palette to reflect the otherworldly feeling throughout the film.
Creating abstract backgrounds to coincide with the film's complexity was a great way to change up my usual composition methods.
This key background of the cave was used as a starting point to map out the rest of the underground scenes.
This was one of the largest backgrounds in the film. It was used for multiple shots and for a long pull sequence.
It was really important that the memory scenes came across as scary to the audience.
This is a great example of how I build up my backgrounds in stages.
