In July 2018 I was hired as a background artist and animator to work on the Screen Ireland short, NITELINK.

I designed the backgrounds in Adobe Photoshop and finessed them in Adobe After Effects.

Because of the amount of scenes in the film, I had to work quickly to complete all of the work. After the line work of each background was signed off by the director, I would then move onto colouring. The colour palette provided was useful to work off of and therefore easy to enhance myself.

I finished off most of the backgrounds in After Effects by using simple blurring and lighting techniques. The overall look of the film was cohesive and easy for the audience to travel through.

Christchurch Cathedral was an important key background that had to be designed early on in production.

Simple panning backgrounds were used to establish the city centre.

By designing certain backgrounds with larger dimensions we were able to place characters freely throughout the space.

It was important to the director that the designs were recognizable as Dublin city centre but through a certain aesthetic.

The interior of the bus had to be designed from many different angles as this section of the film was fast-paced and chaotic. A lot of work was put into backgrounds in this section as they needed to be quite dynamic and over-exaggerated.

I made sure to refer to photographs when designing this space as it was important that the angles were correct.
