The backgrounds created for The Usual were designed in Adobe Photoshop and enhanced in After Effects.

I took on the role as background artist early on in production and started off by setting up the floor plan of the pub. Once the design of the space was complete, it was easier for me to work out what specific areas of the bar would look like.

It was important that the colour palette of the film stayed cohesive throughout so that any subtle changes we made to it were noticed by the audience. The emotional punch that the narrative gave had to be mirrored visually through the animation and especially through the backgrounds.

It was important that the lighting in the bar reflected the mood we were trying to get across to the audience.

This is an example of a background that depended on comp heavy effects to get the mood across.

The interior of the fridge had to feel dark and cold to introduce the audience to the world we were creating.

This background was completed early on in production but just as much work went into it in comp, if not more so. A chaotic energy was created by altering colours and movement.
